Closed Work Permit In Canada
What is Closed Work Permit ?
Closed Work Permit refers to the work visa which allows a foreign national to work in Canada but under prescribed employer and in a fixed occupation. While_open_work_permit has freedom to work for any employer a closed work permit restricts the employee to a particular employer and is usually issued to employee where LMIA is needed or a job offer needed for job offer.
Key Features of Closed Work Permit:
Employer-Specific
A Closed Work Permit is usually issued for a certain employer implying that the holder of the permit can only work for the employer who has sponsored him or her. It is prohibited for a holder of a Closed Work Permit to change the job or workplace, unless the new employer seeks the permit.
Requires LMIA or Job Offer
In most cases the employer is required to attach copy of the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or a confirmation of a job offer to demonstrate that a Canadian or a permanent resident does not exist to do the job. The LMIA allows for the Canadian employer to prove that the hiring of a foreign worker will not harm the Canadian labor market.
Limited Work Opportunities
Of particular concern, the permit ties down the worker to the employer of his/her choice for the duration of the permit’s validity through restriction on cross border employment. If the worker wants to work another employer, he must have to secure a new work permit.
Temporary Nature
As with other work permits, the Closed Work Permit is generally valid for a limited time, normally, corresponding with the contract period or the specific project for which the employee was hired. Loans may be possible but they have to be towards the same employer.
Open work permit is available but depends on some circumstances and dependents can always apply for it.
Closed work permit As noted, the spouses or the common-law partners of the closed work permit holder may apply for an Open WP allowing the holder to work for any employer of his/her choice.
No Work Without a Permit
Different to an Open Work Permit, the individual cannot work when the permit is not obtained, and it is even unlawful to work for another employer without the right permit in Canada may result in legal actions or even getting deported.
As the name suggest, a Closed Work Permit will be effective for foreign workers who have been offered a job by an employer in Canada, but this type is less flexible than the Open Work Permit. It presents a guide to work in Canada but needs close synchronization with the employer and proper paperwork.

Eligibility Criteria For Closed Work Permit In Canada
A Job Offer from The Employer of Your Choice
You have to produce evidence of the fact that you have a job offer from a particular employer in Canada. The offer should be of a full time, permanent or a temporary position.
Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
For most occupations, the employer requires a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) approval from employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). This tool proves that there is no Canadian within the suitable position, or permanent residents and that hiring an international worker is not detrimental to the employment market.
Work-Related Qualifications
Employers usually have standard requirements with those who take their offers, and the minimum requirements include skills, experience, and education. You may need to scan a diploma, certificate or resume if you are claiming any educational qualification earned by you.
Documentation Regarding Intent to Depart from Canada on Completion of Contracted Employment
You may have to prove your desire to leave Canada once your working permit expires. This is important especially for those temporary work permits.
Health and Security Checks
Others require an applicant to sit for a medical exam and to present certificates showing he/she has no security issues.
Canada does not have prior violations of the Immigration Laws.
It is required that you have not violated Canada immigration law at any given time such as overstaying your visa, or working while on a wrong permit.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
You may also need to provide evidence of your ability to pay for your support (and of any dependants accompanying you to Canada).
Valid Passport or Travel Document
You should have an original civil document legally acceptable by the Canadian authorities as a passport or any other travel document in the territory of Canada.

Program Options Under Closed Work Permit
Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)
The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers for positions that cannot be filled by local talent. Employers must obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to ensure that hiring a foreign worker will not negatively impact the Canadian job market.
International Mobility Program (IMP)
The International Mobility Program (IMP) enables foreign workers to work in Canada without the need for an LMIA. This includes workers who are covered under specific trade agreements, like NAFTA or CETA, or those applying for intra-company transferee positions.
Intra-Company Transferee Program
Under the Intra-Company Transferee Program, multinational companies can transfer skilled employees to their Canadian branch. This work permit is available for executives, managers, and employees with specialized knowledge.
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for Employers
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international graduates from Canadian institutions to work for any employer under a closed permit. While graduates benefit from the flexibility, employers still have access to skilled, qualified talent for a limited period.
